STEM clubs connecting students with space with ham radio

The Ramona Sentinel reports school students are preparing for their upcoming contact with the International Space Station via amateur radio

The Ramona Lutheran School upper grades teacher Kelly Cammarano KM6SMW is excited to continue teaching Robotics and Amateur Radio Fundamentals as the school plans to open in-person education, five days a week, beginning Aug. 17.

Students are practicing coding to program their robots and radio protocol as they prepare for their upcoming contact with the International Space Station via amatuer radio — Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS)— which will take place the week of Oct. 12 to 16.

Ramona Lutheran was selected as one of nine schools in America to talk directly with astronauts on the space station via amateur radio. The confirmed date will be announced the week of Oct. 5

The ARISS program promotes learning opportunities as part of the STEM (Science, Technology, Education and Math) initiative.
