How to Become a Ham

To operate an Amateur Radio station in India, you must obtain an **Amateur Station Operator's Certificate (ASOC)**. This certificate is issued by the WPC Wing, Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality: Must be an Indian Citizen.
  • Age: Minimum 12 years of age.
  • Character: No criminal record.

License Grades

Restricted Grade

The entry-level license. Requires passing a written exam on Basic Electronics and Radio Regulations. Permitted to use 10W carrier power.

General Grade

Advanced license. Written exam + Morse Code practical (8 wpm). Permitted to use up to 400W carrier power.

All applications for the ASOC exam and licensing are now handled through the official **Saral Sanchar** portal.

Register on Saral Sanchar
Create a login at www.saralsanchar.gov.in.

Fill ASOC Application
Upload your Photo, Signature, and DOB Proof (Aadhar/Passport). Select your preferred exam center.

Payment
Generate Bharatkosh receipt for the exam fee and link it to your application.

Exam Authorization
Once WPC approves your documents, you will receive an Admit Card for the next scheduled exam at your selected center.

Current Fee Structure

Exams and Licenses are paid via Bharatkosh. Below are the current government prescribed fees (Subject to WPC updates).

Change of Address

Moving your HAM station and antenna permanently requires official intimation to the WPC Wing.

Important Guidelines

  • Temporary portable operation (up to 30 days) does not require a fee, but intimation is recommended.
  • Permanent shifts (Long Term) require a **License Amendment** fee of ₹1,000 through Saral Sanchar.
  • Ensure you have the utility bill of the new premises ready as address proof.

Special Callsign Request

Organizing a DXpedition, contest, or special event? You can request a vanity or special event prefix (e.g., AT1RS, AU2M, 8T0I).

Requests must be submitted via Saral Sanchar at least 30 days before the event. You must provide a valid cover letter explaining the purpose of the event.

Foreign Reciprocal License Procedure

Foreign nationals visiting India can obtain a reciprocal license to operate their equipment. This is a manual process involving coordination with the WPC Wing.

Obtain an Indian Visa
Apply at your local Indian embassy. You must have a valid visa before starting the reciprocal application.

Local Ham Sponsorship & NOC
Find an Indian ham (Aadhaar holder) willing to sponsor you. They must provide a No Objection Certificate (NOC) and a signed letter.

Passport & License Copies
Prepare high-quality copies of your valid Passport and your home country's Ham Radio License (validity must be clear).

Local ID Proof
Provide proof of identity from your home country (e.g., USA Social Security Card or similar).

Bharatkosh Payment
Pay the fee of ₹1,000/- via Bharatkosh and keep the receipt.

Full Application Pack
Submit the duly filled & signed application form, hard-copy photographs, and all the above documents to WPC Wing, New Delhi.

Filing Requirements

Ensure your application includes an Index with each item line and page numbers. The application must be duly and properly signed. Note: All documents must be attested by concerned authorities if required by the WPC.
